Play Diary: Tolga the Mercenary, Fame Does Not Feed You

Studio play diary: Tolga is a fictional character, not a real player. The game was played by our studio autoplayer; the events, figures and screens come from that run, and the telling is ours.

I had a broken company and 3,568 gold. On day 2 I scattered a band of 12: 136 gold, 4 renown, and Montclair rejoiced. I thought I had started well.

On day 10 bandits beat me: 179 gold gone, retreat to Oakmere. The Broken Company closed on day 13.

Tip: Do not fight every band. If the odds are poor, run and fight tomorrow.

Wages never stop

With 8 men, I was worth only 4,686 by day 84. Famine struck on day 160 and held until day 200. Feeding soldiers grew harder still.

Day 252: Tolga’s company.

Tip: Add up daily wages before recruiting. A small trained company costs less than a crowd.

Day 252 ended with 6,112 in net worth and 39 renown. In the same time Selin the merchant grew ninefold. The sword brings fame; money needs trade beside it.
